In the heart of Arizona, the town of Phoenix is home to plenty of awesome attractions and beautiful scenery. Whether you’re just visiting or are a long-time resident, there are some must-see places in the area. Here are five-day trips that are certainly worth the drive from Phoenix, Arizona.
Montezuma Castle
If you drive about an hour and a half north of Phoenix on Interstate 17, you’ll come to the Montezuma Castle National Monument. This is one of the oldest landmarks in the state of Arizona. Nestled in the red rocks of Yavapai County in the village of Camp Verde, Montezuma Castle was built more than 600 years ago by the Sinagua Indians. This five-story structure is a sight you’re sure to remember.
Grand Canyon
Three-and-a-half hours north of Phoenix, the Grand Canyon is a bit farther from Phoenix than these other sites, but it’s totally worth the trip. Make sure to take in the spectacular view from one of the favorite spots: Mather Point, Lipon Point, or the Mary Colter Lookout Studio. If you can handle a late night drive home, it’s definitely worth sticking around to watch the sunset over the canyon.
Tucson Mountain Park
The city of Tucson is only two hours southeast of Phoenix and is home to Tucson Mountain Park, which offers beautiful views of the mountains in Saguaro National Park and tons of hiking trails. Enjoy outdoors activities like hunting, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and more. Take a picnic lunch along and enjoy a meal at one of their picnic areas.
Joshua Tree National Park
Another well-known American landmark is Joshua Tree National Park, which is three hours from Phoenix. The Joshua Tree is a spiny, twisted tree that looks like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. Located in California, this park is full of these fun trees and many other natural treasures. This site is a great spot for hikers looking for some very challenging and exciting trails.
Flagstaff
Finally, if you take a two-hour drive north of Phoenix, through Coconino National Forest, you’ll find Flagstaff. This town is the perfect spot to enjoy all of the natural beauty that this area of the country has to offer. You’ll see everything from ginormous pine trees to dry deserts. You’ll also get a look at Arizona’s tallest peak, Humphrey’s Peak, which is found just north of the city. Skiers and snowboarders will love a trip to this spot, which hosts the annual Arizona Snowbowl.
Flagstaff is also an ideal location for tourists looking to learn more about Native American history. The Wupatki Monument is a National Monument in Flagstaff that dates back many years and celebrates the culture of the natives to this area. You’ll also want to see the preserved ancient pueblos.
