There is, however, another aspect of unforgettable things to do in the Phoenix area. You’ll definitely want to check out this list of Phoenix’s secrets and hidden gems before heading out on your next adventure.

1. Take a Hike

Hiking in the desert mountains seems like a poorly thought-out decision, so many people don’t consider it. However, Phoenix is home to several fantastic hiking trails that aren’t incredibly long but still deliver outstanding scenery and views.

The Lookout Mountain Preserve has several trails accessible to the public. You’ll find trails for hikers of all skill levels, so even if you’re new to walking, it’s worth hitting the trails.

The Cholla Trail is close to Paradise Valley and offers a more complex hiking opportunity for experienced adventurers. At the top of the three-mile hike, you’ll be greeted with splendid views of Phoenix and the area’s rocky landscape.

2. Dick’s Hideaway

This local favorite lives up to its namesake. Dick’s Hideaway is nestled in next to a hardware store and doesn’t have a sign, so you’ll really need to know where you’re going, to discover this true hidden gem. In addition to serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you can get a taste of authentic New Mexican style cuisine that will make anyone’s mouth water.

Be sure to try the Carne Adovada, which is smoked pork simmered in chili, and served with rice, cheese, and beans. The Relleno Plate is another popular option and lets you choose two types of meat from pork, cheese, duck, smoked turkey, or beef. The dish is also served with rice beans and your choice of chilies.

3. Explore the Mystery Castle

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to leave your family and job behind to build your own castle over the course of 15 years? Well, one man did, and you can explore the 18-room castle. The original builder had utterly vanished from his family’s picture until the relatives received a call from a lawyer informing them of his death, finding out that they inherited the property. The daughter lived in the castle until her death in 2010.

This interesting attraction is built from stone, adobe, and various salvaged materials. Tours are available Thursdays through Sundays.

4. The Curious Nature Taxidermy Emporium

If you’re into various natural oddities and taxidermy, this is the attraction for you. Once inside, you’ll find all types of preserved animals, insects, and more. Even though many of the items are available to purchase, stopping in to look at the collection of pinned insects or floor to ceiling glass display of animal skulls provides a museum-like experience. The shop also offers taxidermy classes for anyone interested.

The list above just scratches the surface but gives a glimpse of all Phoenix has to offer. There are plenty of other secrets and hidden gems the city has to offer, but we’re going to leave the discovering up to you!
